I didn’t have a lot to say on this issue and I didn’t care much…until I watched this video. If you know me well, you know there are two “celebrities” that I hold at polar opposites in (or out of) my heart. Two VERY different individuals who I respond to very strongly for two different reasons.
The first of which is CM Punk. Yeah, yeah…say what you will about wrestling. It’s fake. It’s for kids. Whatever…I’ve heard it all. It wouldn’t be the first time and it certainly won’t be the last. However, part of the reason that I am still interested in it is because of CM Punk. He is dynamic. Whether he’s displaying his skills on the mic or in the ring, he is inspiring. His straight edge lifestyle promotes positivity, both physically and mentally and is quite the example in a world of “role models.” Besides, he’s into the things that I’m into. The man has been photographed in public wearing an H2O hoodie. He’s the kind of person that I want to see be successful.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there’s Chris Brown. He is talented. I’ll give him that. I also believe that people deserve second chances. When I see those second chances get squandered, I no longer believe that person is capable of any good.
You might be asking, how has he squandered his second chance? Easy answer. Three words: Good Morning America. Remember the interview where he lost his temper answering questions about the incident with Rihanna which he and his publicist pre-approved? Remember how after the interview he smashed a window with a chair in his dressing room? A “changed” man would own up to his wrongdoings, answer any and all questions honestly. He would take his lumps and pay his dues. However, instead, children of the world get the lesson that your only retribution for an incredibly heinous act is to carry out the required bare minimum. Post bail, show up to court, feign a sincere apology, lose sponsorships, yadda yadda…you’re done. That’s horrible in my eyes. Despicable, even.
Imagine this…what if Rihanna was your sister? Your cousin? Your daughter? Your mother? How would you feel about this situation then? Would you be so quick to forgive this guy then?
And then there’s this whole Twitter war. I’m not going to recap it. The tweets are there. Go back and read them if you haven’t and you care to. If not, it is just a Twitter fight. Fighting over the internet is absolutely pointless anyway. There are no winners.
However, this video, which is a response to a comment that Chris Brown made regarding CM Punk using steroids, gave me hope. It made me realize that I’m not the only one who feels this way. I saw so many people tweeting about how amazing Chris Brown is during the Grammys. So many people who have seemed to forget the things that he’s said and done. To hear such truth come out the mouth of someone that I admire so much made my eyes well up. I agree with everything Punk says in the video. I’m not even going to bother repeating it. That would be pointless.
The bottom line is this…if you’re “sorry,” live your life sorry. Be respectful. If you don’t have the right to be defensive, DON’T BE. If you’ve put someone who is defenseless and undeserving in the role of the victim, then you shouldn’t turn around and try to assume that same role yourself. Just sayin.’
